Will AI Agents Render Your Website Obsolete?

The digital landscape is changing faster than ever, and a little debate is brewing in the world of online business: Will the rise of AI agents make your website unnecessary?

If you’re a small or medium-sized business owner, your website likely feels like the anchor of your entire digital presence. It’s your store, your brochure, and your 24/7 receptionist. But what if the way customers find and interact with your business is about to fundamentally change? Spoiler it already is changing but what if it goes further!

A recent article by Search Engine Journal, titled “When Agents Replace Websites,” suggests that the shift is already underway. It argues that powerful, task-completing AI agents are rapidly becoming the new intermediaries between customers and the businesses they want to interact with.

At Roots To Branches Agency, we believe in keeping our clients informed, not fearful. We’ve taken the key insights from this pivotal article and broken them down into a friendly, actionable guide for SMBs. The short answer is: No, your website isn’t dying, but its job description is definitely changing.

Here is what this agentic future could mean for your business, your marketing budget, and your strategy moving forward. Please note I am not a fortune teller and so this is only a prediction of what I think might happen, however if these things do come to fruition it won’t be in the near future so don’t start panicking.

The Agentic Future: Understanding the New Digital Gatekeeper Or Controlling your own

Before we talk about your website, we need to talk about AI Agents. What even is an AI Agent?

Forget chatbots for a moment, these are slightly different. AI agents are not just programs that answer questions; they are sophisticated systems designed to complete tasks on behalf of a user. Think of them as hyper-efficient, digital personal assistants.

Examples of AI Agent Actions:

  • “Book me the best-rated plumber available tomorrow morning who specializes in tankless water heaters.”
  • “Order a replacement for the specific brand of coffee I bought last month, but find it for the lowest price.”
  • “Plan my weekend trip to the coast, including flights, a highly-rated, budget-friendly hotel, and dinner reservations near the beach.”

These independent agents are task-completing, transactional, and becoming increasingly popular. According to the data cited by the SEJ article, the global agentic AI market is forecasted to approach nearly $200 billion by 2034. This growth is a clear signal: the way people interact with the internet is shifting from traditional searching and browsing to delegating tasks to an AI.

For your business, this means the pathway from a customer’s need to their purchase is potentially being intercepted. Instead of a customer searching for “plumber near me” and clicking through five websites, the customer asks an agent, and the agent, armed with data from those five websites, presents the solution (likely a single business recommendation) or even completes the booking directly.

However AI Agents can also work directly on/with a website particularly if it is a larger website with multiple options for services or ecommerce. An AI agent can ensure a user can find and purchase or book a service with minimal effort and browsing.

My Thoughts

AI Agents I predict will increase in the future but the main issue with AI Agents for me is security and trust. Would I trust an AI Agent with my credit card to go and buy a £5k family holiday? Hell no.

Would I trust an AI Agent to find me a plumber? Maybe but I would still most likely ask my friends and family for recommendations.

AI Agents will become part of the fabric of our busy digital world that is almost definite. But as human nature we naturally distrust things we don’t understand and AI Agents are currently for the average joe public something that is unknown and not something relatable at this stage.
